Rooted between the Book of Judges and 1stSamuel . Judges was a time of spiritual failure and was about to be turned around to a point by Samuel. It seems that the Book of Ruth cries out in the closing words that there will be King, there will be a Messiah, no matter what the circumstances might say otherwise!
Judges
· Opens with the death of Joshua & Israel facing war with the Canaanites
· Failure after failure
o Conquered by Mesopotamia – delivered by Othniel
o Conquered by Moabites – delivered by Ehud & Shamgar
o Conquered by Canaan – delivered by Deborah & Barak
o Conquered by Midian – delivered by Gideon
o Civil war - delivered by Abimelech
o Conquered by Philistines & Ammonites – delivered by several judges
o Conquered by Philistines – Delivered partially by Samson
· Religious apostasy
o When Israel would fall away from the Lord, He would send oppression to the people.
o Depending on who was leading in Egypt, there seemed to be times of "rest" for the people of God
o After the middle of the 12th Century, there were for a time no more periods of “rest” due to the continued apostasy of the people of God. They were spiritually faltering.
· Moral failure of a nation
o Judges is basically a book of the failure of Israel to keep the moral spiritual standards set forth by Moses and Joshua.
· Political anarchy
o Israel failed also to conquer Canaan – falling instead into the idolatry of the people of the land and falling farther away from their God
· Period of time from the death of Joshua to Samuel, Israel’s last judge
o Period of around 300 years
· Judges closes out with a very sad statement on the affairs of the People of God, which is why Ruth closes out with such hope: THERE WILL BE A KING!(in spite of all that was going on, God would indeed keep His promise and a King was coming)
o Judges 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. KJV
o Ruth 4:17 And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David. 18 Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron, 19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, 20 And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon, 21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, 22 And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David. 1 Samuel
· Book of history centered around Israel’s last judge, Samuel
o Samuel was also a priest and a prophet
· Focus on Israel’s cry for a king - Israel’s rejection of God as their King
· Focus on God’s grace & His Sovereignty
o David comes on the scene and is anointed even though Saul is in power - the Promise of Something better
o David is a type/shadow of Christ
· David is raise up from obscurity - so was Jesus
· David faced down "giants" - so did Jesus
· David was anointed king before he actually took the throne - so was Jesus
· David was a man after God's own heart - Jesus was the beloved Son in Whom God was well pleased
· David was willing to kill for his bride - Jesus was willing to die for His
· David's son died - Jesus died and rose again
· David - had son that betrayed him - Jesus was the faithful Son
o Saul is a type/shadow of Satan
· jealous of David/Christ
· Neither were happy with the power they were given and abused it
· Both were at one time the anointed of God (Ezekiel 28:14 & I Samuel 15:1)
· Both came against the anointed of God
· Both had their authority ripped from them violently by God
· Overcame by a "familiar" sword
· Focus on God’s faithfulness to His people even after they rejected Him

Ruth –
· Shows partial genealogy of Christ
· The Book of Ruth was read at the Feast of Pentecost
· Showed forth God’s grace not only to Jews, but to Gentiles as well
o 1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.KJV
· The ordinance of gleaning was noted from Leviticus
o Leviticus 23:22 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not make clean riddance of the corners of thy field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy harvest: thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger: I am the Lord your God. KJV

· Boaz was the kinsman redeemer and Jesus was the Redeemer of all His kinsman
· Boaz told his servants to protect Ruth - Jesus gave his angels charge over us
· Boaz was willing to suffer financially to have his bride - Jesus gave all He had for His bride
· Boaz had future lineage that would sit on the throne - Jesus WAS that future lineage that now sits on the throne
· Ruth/Naomi/Orpah – The Church
· Each had different walks, different levels of faith and different levels of commitment
· One generation guided the next generation to go deeper and farther than they did
· One generation of ministry birthed another generation of righteousness which in turn brought healing to the first generation
· Just as with the church some went forward, some went forward farther and some returned to the old way of life

· Possible the same Salma as 1 Chronicles 2:51 Salma the father of Bethlehem KJV which would mean that he was possibly either the founder or a very chief person in Bethlehem

1. Now it came to pass . . .
a. it came to pass . . . this thing is not forever, it came, literally, to come to a passing, it came to go away! This storm shall cease and after it I shall stand! It has been said that it might pass like a kidney stone - but IT WILL PASS!
2. . . .In the days when the Judges ruled . . .
a. Judges 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. KJV
i. Who knows what was in Elimalech's heart to cause him to go to Moab.
b. Judges 2:8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old. 9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash. 10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. 11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim: KJV
3. (there was no king in Israel . . .)
a. this verse is used 4 times in the Book of Judges. The period of time covers around 350 years and spans almost 25% of the history of Israel.
4. Why? (was there no king in Israel?)
a. 1 Samuel 8:4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, 5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. 7 And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. KJV
i. YOU go up the mountain and hear from God, then tell us what He has said.
ii. Cover your face from glowing after you talk with God, we are scared of His Presence
iii. Simply - they did not want to follow God and made no pretence about it - they rejected having God as their King.
5. . . .there was a famine in the land . . .
a. This was one of many results of not having a king and wanting to be like the nations around them.
b. The famine was in Bethlehem-Judah - the place of bread and praise - it was the worst type of famine.
c. Ezekiel 14:13 Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it: KJV

6. . . .and a certain man of Bethlehem Judah . . .
a. Bethlehem means “house of bread”

i. When we leave the “house of bread” and “praise,” death comes.

a. He was also The Word - sometimes our lifestyles do not line up with what we are being fed and The Word we are hearing and it just seems easier to go. We complain we are not getting fed, this is not our vision, we are led elsewhere but look again at what did survive the famine!
7. . . .went to sojourn . . .
a. Sojourn - OT:1481guwr (goor); a primitive root; properly, to turn aside from the road (for a lodging or any other purpose), i.e. sojourn (as a guest); also to shrink, fear (as in a strange place); also to gather for hostility (as afraid):
i. Elimelech turned aside from the house of bread and from praise
1. Websters dictionary defines sojourn (er) as stay as a temporary resident
2. He had no plans to stay here long term
3. He had no plans to die here
4. He had no plans for his kids to die here
5. We never have any plans for “sin” to catch up with us
6. We almost always “stay” longer than we planned when we go where we are not supposed to go.

i. ANY TIME we leave praise and Bread (The Word) we are flirting with death
8. . . .in the country of Moab . . .
a. Interstingly enough, Moab is where Moses died (Deut 34:5)

b. Land named for the son of Lot by incest with his daughter (Genesis 19:37)
c. You could see the Promised Land from here (Deuteronomy 34:6)
d. How often do we live just “outside” the promises of God, seeing them and not entering in?

b. Naomi, who was called Pleasant (that’s what her name meant) upon return to Bethelehem Judah asked to be called “Marah” or Bitter.
c. Leaving “bread and praise” can result in bitterness and spiritual death

a. Ruth is partially a family sized version of Judges - people left God and were defeated then came back to God and were blessed.
b. Ruth shows this sequence in a family where Judges shows it with a nation.

· Those in darkness can still hear what is happening in the light though they may not see it
· She got up . . . Already resurrection was churching inside her, to return . . .
· She got a Word that she was missing - She left Bread and Praise - and missed getting "fed" then she heard that in her home country God was blessing his people w/ Bread
· Notice that life went on in the land of the famine, as a matter of fact life went well there, at some point before, during or after Rahab was marred into royal family and had a son . . .named Boaz
· Just because you aren't getting fed there doesn’t mean Bread isn't there.
o I have heard this before, I am just not getting fed, then look back at attendance of 1 Sunday per month etc.

- Even in the hard times, especially in the hard times others are watching and with all the sorrow and brokenness that Naomi felt adn went through, Ruth saw someting in her life that was better than what she had known and she decided to follow her and trust in her God
