1. And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; . . .
a. How often do we come to the place where God will allow removal of those who we are following down the wrong path for our lives? These people were not Moabites, and yet they were surrounded by the culture and even lived like those around them. God had greater plans for them than to live this way. God wants to lead you and does not want you to be led by those who walk contrary to His ways.
b. There is also the thought that is linked with his name, God Is King . . .when he died his children did that which was forbidden by God in the Book of Deuteronomy which was to marry Moabites. Also died the thought and conviction that "God was King" Naomi and her kids ceased to live under the Mighty Banner of their Mighty God but rather to live and eek out a life in the shadow of pagans and their gods for the next years.
c. Ruth is partially a family sized version of Judges - people left God and were defeated then came back to God and were blessed
i. Ruth shows this chain of events in a family where Judges shows it in a nation
1. Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved KJV
2. Psalms 86:5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. KJV
d. There is life in God and His Presence and Death when we are away from it
i. Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life , that both thou and thy seed may live: 20 That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them. KJV
2. . . .and she was left . . .
a. When "God is not King" then "that which has been pleasant" will "turn bitter"
b. Naomi dependence went from God, to her husband, to her sons, and back to God when the husband and sons died
c. She had come to the end of herself, the end of what she was able to do, her only hope now was God
Looking at Bread as The Word -
i. Sometimes The Word doesn’t line up with what we see, what we want, our lifestyles
3. Stop The Cycle
a. Are you blessed enough that you will leave The Bread
b. Don’t leave the table hungry

a. Trying to be normal while living away from God is never prosperous
i. Another picture of "almost"
2. Names of wives
a. Orpah - stiff necked
b. Ruth - something worth seeing
3. And they dwelled there . . .about ten years . . .
a. They stopped trying to return home
b. They were no longer investigating what might be a way of exodus from Moab but rather had "settled" there.
c. They embraced the culture around them

a. Some commentators feel that COD was due to the marrying of women of Moab that was forbidden
b. If that in fact is true it is interesting that while they may have died, God blessed Ruth in spite of their spiritual failure
i. Abraham had much pain and suffering in his life (in his heart) because of his son Ishmael, but God did not blame Ishmael, on the contrary God blessed Ishmael
2. . . .and the women was left . . .
a. While The Bible does not specifically give why they all three died God is Sovereign and will use situations in our lives to pull us back to Himself when we drift away

i. She realized that she was not from Moab, that she was not a Moabite but rather an Ephrathite
ii. There were seeds of faith that were watered by the Good Word of The Lord
iii. There was yet resurrection in her dead spirit and faith
iv. She realized what she was missing and the cost of her being in Moab was greater than any cost there might be for returning home

3. Ruth was provision for both of those needs

a. Those in darkenss are still aware of what can happen in the light
i. They may not fully understand or accept it but may well be aware
