Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. KJV
I. Was
a. OT:1961 hayah (haw-yaw); a primitive root [compare OT:1933]; to exist, ii.e. be or become, come to pass (always emphatic, and not a mere copula or auxiliary): KJV - beacon, altogether, be (-come), accomplished, committed, like), break, cause, come (to pass), do, faint, fall, follow, happen, have, last, pertain, quit (oneself-), require, use.
b. Haya – was/became was the same word used to describe what happens to Lots wife
i. Genesis 19:26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt . KJV
c. Points to ponder:
i. Law of first mention
ii. Replenish – in Genesis 1:28 is the same word and strongs number as used in Genesis 9:1 which was clearly understood to mean replenish.
II. Without form
a. OT:8414 tohuw (to'-hoo); from an unused root meaning to lie waste; a desolation (of surface), i.e. desert; figuratively, a worthless thing; adverbially, in vain: KJV - confusion, empty place, without form, nothing, (thing of) nought, vain, vanity, waste, wilderness.
b. 1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion , but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. KJV has to be dealt with if you choose to define 8414 as confusion
i. Most agree that this was all pointing to chaos – which is hard to grasp that God created chaos and then arranged it into order.
III. Void
a. OT:922 bohuw (bo'-hoo); from an unused root (meaning to be empty); a vacuity, i.e. (superficially) an undistinguishable ruin: KJV - emptiness, void.
IV. The Gap Theory
a. Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the Heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. KJV
i. Isaiah 45:18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else. KJV
1. Vain here is the same word as without form, 8414 used in Genesis 1:2.
2. Isaiah 45 should be read in is entirety.
a. Translation issues can be seen in Isaiah 45:7.

b. Jeremiah 4:23-28 - 23 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. 24 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. 25 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. 26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger. 27 For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end. 28 For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it. KJV
c. Job 38:4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. 5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? 6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; 7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? KJV
i. It would seem that the “sons of God” or angels were shouting for joy as the foundations of the earth were being placed by God
1. Sons of God – there is not other way to define sons of God in this passage, as man was certainly not there in Verse 2.
2. Foundations –
a. Psalms 82:1 A Song or Psalm of A'-saph. God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods. 2 How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah. 3 Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. 4 Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked. 5 They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course. 6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. 7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes. 8 Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations. KJV
i. Why were the foundations of the earth out of course and when did that happen?
ii. They are called “children of the most High but told they will die like men . . .?
iii. They will fall like one of the princes – which prince fell and who saw him fall and what did he look like as he fell?

i. Same word used in Exodus 10:21 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.
ii. 22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days: 23 They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings. KJV
b. This was not a created thing, nowhere does it say that God “created” darkness!
c. God does not say that darkness is good
d. This darkness seems different from what you and I think of darkness as being, it could be FELT, it was described as THICK

1. International scientist have “found” a reservoir that is 3x the size of all surface oceans at the earth’s core
ii. Remember, there was water under the firmament and water below the firmament after God separated them, how does that affect the meaning of “deep” I think there is probably something more to look out for in future verses that will make “the deep” more concrete than it is at this point.
