Genesis 22:1-14
22:1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you,
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen. KJV
This entire story is prophetic - Abrham and Isaac were real literal people but they were walking prophetically to show what would happen at Christ's crucifixion.

1. . . .after these things . . .
a. Everything that Abraham had lived through had brought him to this point. Each step was ordered, even his missteps were used by God. It all came down to this, this moment of faith.
2. . . .thine only son Isaac whom thou lovest . . .
a. We of course know that Isaac was not Abraham's only son, but this wording was used to point to the fact that Jesus was God's only begotten son
i. The angels were called "sons of God" but they were CREATED by the hand of God, they were not his literal sons
ii. But Jesus was BEGOTTEN of a woman, He was God's LITERAL son whom God loved very very much
3. . . .the land of Moriah . . .
a. Abrham once again set out at the word of God not really knowing when or where he would get to his appointment.
b. He had faith in God that God was in control of his life and that what God him to do he was supposed to do even though he did not see the full outcome at the time he started out on this trip.
4. . . .Abraham rose up early in the morning . . .
a. He did not even hesitate to follow God . . .this is faith in action.
b. Can you even imagine the night he spent, knowing that tomorrow he was going to slay his son for God!!!
c. It shows that he was willing to give his son to God and is a picture of God giving HIS son for us!
5. . . .then on the third day . . .
a. This speaks of Jesus being in the tomb and rising again on the third day.
b. So this is prophetic - Jesus died and rose again three days later - Isaac for all intents and purposes was dead the moment Abraham got up and started on this journey and was "resurrected" so to speak in type and shadow of Jesus being resurrected - both on the "third day"
6. . . .saw the place afar off . . .
a. This too is prophetic - at the end of the story it speaks of "it being seen" on the mountain. The "it" is Christ's crucifixion, that would happen many years later, but because Abraham followed God wholly and went from "glory unto glory" he was able to see things that no one else saw. He was able to see the "day of the Lord"
7. . . .i and the lad will go yonder and worship . . .
a. True worship cannot come without sacrifice
i. We humble ourselves in worship to The Almighty, His will, not ours.
8. . . .and come again to you . . .
a. The most powerful expression of faith uttered in the Old Testament!
b. Remember, spiritually speaking Isaac was already "sacrificed" in his heart the moment Abraham got up to take this journey, which also speaks of the Lamb Who was slain before the foundation of the world. In Abrahams heart, Isaac was already dead, but HE HAD FAITH THAT GOD WOULD RESURRECT ISAAC, so his telling the two that they would return meant he fully believed Isaac was dead/would die on that mountain but that God would raise him from the dead
i. This also speaks to Jesus' resurrection as well as The Rapture, and His 2nd Coming!
1. Jesus said I will go away and come again, for a time you will not see Me then you will see Me again!
9. . . .wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son . . .
a. This was a picture of Jesus carrying the cross upon His own back as we went to Calvary
10. . . .God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering . . .
a. Which is exaclty what God did in/through Christ on Calvary, God became man so that man could be redeemed.
b. God literally died for us in The Person of Jesus Christ
c. One person said it this way "The Son of God became a son of man so that the sons of man could become sons of God"
11. . . .so they went both of them together . . .
a. Isaac at this time was bout 33 years old . . . Jesus was 33 at the time of His death
b. Isaac went willingly submitted to his father, he could have overpowered him and not gone, Abraham was well over 100 years old at this time, but Isaac was willing to do this - Jesus was willing to give Himself on the Cross, He prayed in Gethsemane :not my will by yours be done?
12. . . .and bound Isaac his son . . .
a. Again, Isaac was fully submitted to his father - Jesus was fully submitted to His Father as well
13. . . .and laid him on the altar upon the wood . . .
a. Jesus would have been laid upon the cross as it was on the ground, then bound then nailed before the Cross was raised.
14. . . . Thine only son . . .
a. This once again speaks of both Isaac and Jesus being the "only son"
b. It also shows how God was determined to save mankind, even in the time of Abraham, by the death of His only begotten Son"
15. . . .And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh . .
a. Jehovah-jireh means "The God Who will provide"
16. . . .in the mount of The Lord it shall be seen . . .
a. This is why I think this happened on what would later be called Calvary - either way God showed Abraham something special and precious because Abraham obeyed, and what He showed him was the salvation of mankind through His Son Jesus - here may have also been seen the Rapture and 2nd Coming,
17. Hebrews 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
a. A "figure" like a figurine. If I saw a figuring of a person riding a horse it would make me think of a real person riding a horse, this was a "figure" or a "type/shadow" of Jesus making redemption for all mankind
18. John 8:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. KJV
a. . . .My day . . .This was Jesus speaking in the NT about what happened in Genesis 22, specifically Genesis 22:14, He knew that Abhram had seen His day because He was the One Who showed it to him!
