1.     I Remember When

a.     Identify the last time  you really saw something miraculous in the church?

                              i.         How did seeing or experiencing that make you feel?

1.     Was there peace or confusion?

2.     Why Don’t We See It

a.     Often ministry gifts that operated in the early church are not seen in today's church

                              i.         Because

1.     People are one way in Church and another way outside and newcomers cannot reconcile what they see from what they hear.

2.     Ministry gifts have been used to exalt self rather than Kingdom

3.     Ministry gifts are not understood so "ignored"

4.     Leaders have had to deal with the fallout of misused ministry gifts resulting in hurt people and choose not to allow those gifts to move inside the Church

3.     A Right Way And A Wrong Way

a.     1 Corinthians 14:26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. 27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. 28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. 29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. 30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first  hold his peace. 31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. 34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. 35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. 36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. 38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. 39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order .

KJV

a.     Most who have been in church for any length of time have either seen a little moving of the Spirit or a lot of it.  We are cautioned frequently to not "grieve" the Holy Ghost and by that most seem to mean that whatever is claimed to be "of the Spirit" goes.  According ot what we just read from the Apostle Paul this is simply not true

b.     Many if not most pastors would simply rahter not have to deal with the confusion and out of order state so in many churches this kind of spiritual happening simply does not happen

                                            i.        NOTICE - those that came to "church" at this time came to GIVE

ii.        Pauls letters were sent to set things in order in those meetings that were to become a model of church today

1.     House Churches were the mode of some

                                                                       i.         Romans 16:5 Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Salute my wellbeloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ. KJV

ii.         Colossians 4:15 Salute the brethren which are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church which is in his house. 16 And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea.

17 And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it. 18 The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen. KJV

c.     MANY other verses about meetings in houses, etc

4.     Gods Credit Card

a.     2 Timothy 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; KJV

                              i.         Sheila Hatton story - she in another time would have stolen the card but now was a Christian and was cautious about how she handled it and was careful to bring me the receipt and spend wisely and well.  This is what she herself told me.

ii.         Look at verse 7 - why was Paul telling this to Timothy? Probably because he was being timid, wading just far enough to feel the power of God but not to swim in it.

1.     Power and love and a sound mind is a Spirit, or evidence of His Spirit sent by God, this is how God wishes us to operate

2.     DO NOT operate in fear

                                                         i.         Fear motivated the servant to keep and  bury what his master had intended all along for him to invest and prosper

                                                                       i.         Matthew 25:19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. 20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. 21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. 23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. 26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: 27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. 28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. 29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. KJV

c.     Verse 8 - Do not be ashamed of me -

                                                         i.         Paul may have been referring to his imprisonment or

ii.         The fact that he had already become known for writing weighty letters and operating in the power of God/gifts of the Spirit

iii.         If you are not confident you have it then you won't be confident you can give it!

c.     Timothy's "gift of God"

                                            i.        Paul told him to stir it up

1.     Like a fire

2.     Without attention and being fed even a roaring fire will die

                                          ii.        Gift of God . . .

1.     Gift . . .NT:5486 charisma (khar'-is-mah); from NT:5483; a (divine) gratuity, i.e. deliverance(from danger or passion); (specifically) a (spiritual) endowment, i.e. (subjectively) religious qualification, or (objectively) miraculous faculty: KJV - (free) gift.

                                                                       i.         NT:5483 charizomai (khar-id'-zom-ahee); middle voice from NT:5485; to grant as a favor, i.e. gratuitously, in kindness, pardon or rescue: KJV - deliver, (frankly) forgive, (freely) give, grant.

iii.        which is in thee by the putting on of my hands . . .

1.     Jesus is The Baptizer - but there is a precedence for the laying on of hands and people receiving something because of that act of faith

2.     We must reconcile what we have been taught and what The Bible teaches . . .

                                                                       i.         Acts 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. KJV

ii.         Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. 7 And all the men were about twelve. KJV

iii.         1 Timothy 4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. 15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. 16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. KJV

iv.         Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this will we do, if God permit.KJV

3.     Also consider -

                                                                       i.         1 Timothy 5:22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure. KJV

                                                                                    i.         Paul was previously speaking about people "working in the church"

1.     Make sure they are ready before you put them into a position of authority and leadership.

2.     It is easier to get them in than it is to get them out

                                                                                   ii.         But also

1.     Matthew 7:6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample  them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. KJV

5.     I Give What I Have To Give

a.     Acts 3:2 And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; 3 Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms.

4 And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. 5 And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. 6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none ; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. 7 And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. 8 And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. KJV

a.     Jesus is The Healer

                                            i.        The Sherriff serves legal papers

1.     The judge has already ruled in this matter and you are there to serve the legal papers making known the judgement
