2023.11.08 - CRISIS - The Great In Between

Deuteronomy 34

  • we know that Moses was dead, and that God had buried him
  • We know Israel mourned for thirty days
    • In their time of mourning there was no time of moving

Joshua 1:1-2

1:1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister, saying,

2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel. KJV

Joshua 2:1

2:1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there. KJV

Joshua 3:1-4

3:1 And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over.

2 And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the host;

3 And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.

4 Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore. KJV

MINDSET

The children of Israel were out of Egypt - but there heart was still there

  • They were still slaves in their minds and mindsets
  • They made the past seem better than it actually was
  • Often what we need is a renewing of our minds, we have been set free physically and spiritually but our minds are still in the past, stuck in the old way of thinking and doing
  • They saw themselves not as bold children of God but as grasshoppers - and grasshoppers is what they acted like

If we are not careful we will become spiritual transients when it comes to spiritual things

  • Transient means momentary, temporary, no lasting only a short time
  • If we fail to look past the past and even the present towards Heaven, we may fail to reach it

TIME TO MOVE

Moses is dead - it is time to move on

  • God wants us to have a time of mourning - but He also wants that time to be limited and He tells us when it is time to move past that moment.  (rlware - we may never get OVER somethings but we need to get PAST them)
  • Ecclesiastes teaches us that there is a time for everything - sometimes it is just time to move on
  • Don’t get trapped in a moment - capture the moment but don’t let it capture you.

Your pain cannot and should not be the only thing that ties you to the past.

  • There should be great memories, stones from the middle of the Jordan - to mark where we have come from but those places and memories are only markers, not prisons or idols.
  • Memories of the past should set you free not hold you back

Jacob/Joseph

  • Jacob noted that he would mourn the loss of Joseph until he died
    • It isn't that God can't heal the past, sometimes it is that we will not let him
  • Our holding on will not keep that thing or person alive, but it will allow US to remain in the past and even die there - if we do not get free we will become like zombies - we are moving around like we are alive but we are really dead inside

RESURRECTION AND CHANGE

God may not resurrect the thing that died, but He may well resurrect the part of you that died with the thing - but remember, resurrection always brings change - you cannot just go back to life like it was before, old coping mechanisms, allowing old triggers, you cannot just go back and live and die like you did but live like you haven't .

Your world has not ended - just the world as you know it

It did happen but God wants to lead us through it

Psalms 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. KJV

It isn't what we think about our readiness for change and transition but rather what God thinks

No one is exempt from the Great In Between - we all face it. Look at the comments of Christ on the cross

  • "why have You forsaken Me?"
  • The Great Between is never an easy place
  • Israel wandered because of mindsets
  • past chains still bound their thinking and in doing so bound also their movement forward into victory and promise
  • Paul
    • Philippians 1:21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.

23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. KJV

  • Samuel -
    • 1 Samuel 16:1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons. KJV
  • Married People

When we move or get married we need to embrace those things, we cannot just pine for the past but must learn a new future.

Marriage is not what we might have thought that it would be, some, instead of embracing the change and the reality of the new thing are stuck in the middle.  We can get stuck because we have been taught to go on our feelings and so often we don’t "feel" any different, we have not yet learned to walk in faith and we go by what we feel.

  • Saved In Soul Only

We can get saved under duress and once the "pain" has eased up forget that we have a new life to live and to learn, in that sense we go back to what we know and do what we have always done, not learning about our new life and ending up right back where we started from, this can be a cycle

Life is about change

  • Adam was alone, Adam had pets, Adam got married, Adam had kids who fought, and so on and so forth
  • Abraham went from one place to another but he was never lost.  In fact he was looking for a city

I still haven’t found _ u2
