2. If perhaps David was not his biological son he certainly found his place in the family and knew where he stood

1. That he was released by Saul and ordained by God to fight
2. David knew he had favor with God because of past battles

5. David was a forward thinker - he saw past the battle to the winning of the war
1. Same with lion and bear - knew death meant won war

a. David understood authority and that Goliath had been advanced wrongly and on an earthly platform - Davids words put Goliath back in his place, David sized him up and knew exactly what he was dealing with

1. He was not sure exaclty what was happening though the landscape was familiar. David changed the rules of engagement
a. Goliath looked around and saw David - he was expecting something - different
2. Expected a totally different method of attack
3. Did not understand the tactics of a man of God

3. Who David Fought
a. Goliath - not all the other men on the field
b. Eliab, his brother, and David won
1. Once engaged, he fought and walked away the victor
1. Do you think he ever fought his brother again?
a. David knew this was not a death battle
i. Someimes people can come back from being on the wrong side of the fight and overcome
1. Misunderstanding
2. Miscommunication
3. Ignorance of what is really happenimg

c. A lion - and won - where he was supposed to be
d. A bear - and won - where he was supposed to be
e. Lust - and lost - he was NOT where he was supposed to be
f. His bother - won - not a death match
1. At the moment David walked away it is not clear that Eliab actually knew he had lost
2. Be more concerned about being right than winning an argument
g. Saul - win - just stated the facts with authority
h. Saul/peer pressure/tradition - win I will do this but not the way you have done it before, you want a sword but I want a stone
1. Notice here though that David did not entirely forsake tradition - he did use the sword to cut off Goliaths head at the end
4. The Fight of Fights
a. Goliath was literally foretelling of things that would someday come

3. YOU - there is no way you can win (but He did)
b. In the natural there was almost no way that this would have worked out so well, but we are not to fight in the natural

1. Principalities - chief in rank, ruler, magistrate, first in political rank or power
2. Powers - jurisdiction, right, strength - heavenly
3. Rulers - world ruler, an epithet of satan vision or image representation of

Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. KJV
1. Thrones - seat, throne, potentate, stately seat
2. Dominions - mastery, rulers, government, Supreme in Authority
c. There are things that are created that are not visible, but were created by God, both in heaven and on earth

5. Who Then Do WE Fight?
a. Ephesians 6:12 - can we SEE principalities, powers, rulers of darkness and spiritual wickedness?
b. How often do we war against people instead of the spirit that is driving them?
c. Steve- don’t allow cancer in my body but I wont necessarily cut off my leg for a minor infection. Don’t fight things we cannot win.

1. Fight with those who have been "tried" else you may end up wounded by friendly fire
