1. Not His First Sight Of War
a. 1 Samuel 17:15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem. KJV
i. David had come and gone more than this time from the presence of Saul -but this time something was different, what was the difference?
a. 1 Samuel 17:29 Is there not a cause? KJV
i. Cause - OT:1696 dabar (daw-bar'); a primitive root; perhaps properly, to arrange; but used figuratively (of words), to speak; rarely (in a destructive sense) to subdue: KJV - answer, appoint, bid, command, commune, declare, destroy, give, name, promise, pronounce, rehearse, say, speak, be spokesman, subdue, talk, teach, tell, think, use [entreaties], utter, well, work.
ii. This was not just David having a bit of righteous indignation and emotion, there was something deeper stirring within the soul of this man. David knew already how to hear from God and I truly believe he DID hear from God on this day.
iii. The word he used translated means appoint, bid, command, promise, those are words you and I might use to describe when God tells us to do something.
iv. I think God spoke to David and he listened and obeyed
2. Not Every Battle Is Yours To Fight
a. We may not be calle to fight every battle out there, but we CAN make a difference
i. Story of the man walking and throwing starfish back into the ocean from the beach
b. John 5:1 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. 5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? 7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but w hile I am coming, another steppeth down before me.8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. KJV
i. There was a multitude of sick and broken people there that day - but only ONE of them got healed. As a matter of fact there were always more to be healed, more to be fed, more to be ministered to.
ii. You must walk in purpose. What was his purpose? He had seen and heard what the Father did and was doing the same.
iii. There will in this life ALWAYS be more to accomplish for Him, and the more we work together the more we can accomplish. But we must move and minister in our calling, in His time and anointing. David had come several times and back and for whatever reason this time something inside of him was stirred and he responded valiantly.
c. 1 Samuel 30:1 And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire; 2 And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way. 3 So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives. 4 Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep. 5 And David's two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. 6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God. 7 And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech's son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David. 8 And David inquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all. KJV
i. David asked and God answered - and God granted victory
i. 2 Samuel 21:15 Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint. 16 And Ishbi-benob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David. 17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel . KJV
i. It is not noted that David asked nor that God answered and David almost lost his life to a giant much like the one he took out!
ii. Think about that!!
iii. God may anoint you for a season and for a region, if you move out of that season or region you may not have that some anointing.
a. I see this in church leadership often
i. People are very anointed leaders in one arena and think they can do the same thing in another place and they are unsuccessful, even to the place of moral failure. Bloom where God has planted you!
3. In Closing
a. Go WHEN you are sent!
i. Psalms 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way KJV
ii. Don’t allow yousefl to take the "it's not my job mentality" but know also that it is not your job t right every wrong - know your calling, know your assignment and do THAT?
